Research theme of LISC

The LISC researchers are specialised in computer sciences and applied mathematics, with a solid experience of interdisciplinary projects. The team develops tools and methods in applied mathematics and in computer science to understand, predict and if possible manage the behaviour of complex environmental systems. The systems can typically be aquatic ecosystems, forests, in interaction with human activity.

In order to achieve this, we use individual-based models (IBM). By explicitly representing the individuals and their interactions, these models enable to accurately study, in simulation, the link between the individual dynamics and the global phenomena which they can generate. We focus on the development of specific methods to determine the robust global phenomena generated by individual interactions, and to determine adequate action policies to guarantee the sustainability of some important properties of the system.

The team generally participates to collaborations between researchers specialised in ecosystems or social systems, and computer scientists, mathematicians or physicists, building together a model and helping to define sustainable policies.
